In 2005, at just 20 years old, Ismail came to Canada from India with his family. They were looking for a better life—one with greater opportunity, safety, peace and more choices for the future.
Growing up in Dubai and having studied in India, Ismail saw limited opportunities and intense competition for work. His father wanted his children to have access to education and the chance to build careers based on their interests and abilities. Canada offered that possibility.
The family arrived in Niagara Falls as permanent residents, and Ismail began his Canadian hospitality career as a Houseman at Days Inn then joined Hilton Embassy Suites. Starting at the ground level, he learned the industry from the inside out. Through hard work and determination, he progressed to Shipping & Receiving clerk, then housekeeping supervisor and later Housekeeping Manager.
After four years at Niagara College, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in hospitality, Ismail’s journey took him overseas to Switzerland. He spent six months there, completed his Master’s in Hospitality, and met his wife. He also lived in Dubai, gaining valuable international experience and exposure to different cultures and hospitality environments.
In 2023, Ismail and his wife moved to Calgary. Ismail arrived without a permanent place to live and stayed at Homewood Suites for his first month while he settled into their new city. His wife and six-year-old son joined shortly after he was able to rent an apartment in the Bridgeland area.
Professionally, he began his Calgary journey as an Assistant Manager of Rooms Operations at Delta Downtown. In 2024, he joined and is still at Marriott Hotels Delta Calgary South as the Rooms Operations Manager – Front Office.
Today, Ismail brings a unique combination of education, operational experience and international perspective to Calgary’s hospitality industry.
Having lived in India, Canada, Switzerland and Dubai and travelled extensively, he has experienced different cultures, languages and ways of life. He understands what it feels like to arrive somewhere new, and that perspective shapes the way he welcomes and connects with guests.
At Delta Calgary South, Ismail says one of the things he loves most is the diversity of the people who walk through our doors. Guests come from all over the world, each with their own culture, experiences and reasons for travelling. He enjoys meeting them, hearing their stories and helping them along their journeys.
His experiences have taught him to see hospitality through the eyes of the traveler.
His career across Housekeeping, Shipping & Receiving, Rooms Operations and Front Office has also given him a broad understanding of hotel operations. He understands how each department contributes to the guest experience and how strong teamwork behind the scenes ultimately shapes what guests experience at the front desk and throughout the hotel.
For Ismail, Alberta continues to represent opportunity. He appreciates the accessibility and flexibility of education, including the ability to continue learning online while working. He has also watched his family pursue opportunities here. His brother, for example, has been able to build a path in food blogging and photography in Canada, something Ismail believes would have been much more difficult to pursue back home.
One of his favorite Canadian memories demonstrates the kind of connection he values.
One day, while sitting on the porch of his home, a young Japanese international student approached him and said he wanted to learn English. The two developed a friendship and began meeting regularly, teaching and learning from one another.
For Ismail, the experience was more than helping someone practice a language. It was a genuine connection between two people from different cultures who might never have crossed paths otherwise. He says this kind of experience would likely never have happened for him back home.
Today, Calgary is home for Ismail, his wife and their young son. He describes his transition to the city as very positive and appreciates Calgary’s friendly and welcoming culture.
When Ismail reflects on his journey, what stands out is how every chapter has shaped the person and hospitality leader he is today. The young man who arrived in Canada at 20 has become someone who brings the world with him to work every day. His education has given him knowledge, his career has given him experience, and living in different countries has given him an understanding of people that cannot be learned from a textbook.
That perspective matters in hospitality. It allows Ismail to recognize the excitement of a first visit, the uncertainty of arriving somewhere unfamiliar and the importance of a genuine welcome. His journey has become part of the experience he creates for others—helping guests from around the world feel seen, understood and comfortable, while bringing a broader perspective to the team and to the hospitality industry in Calgary.
Ismail came to Canada with his family looking for a future with more possibilities. Today, he has built that future here—and the experiences he gathered along the way have become part of what he brings to Calgary, to the hotel industry and to every guest whose journey brings them through our doors.
