# Jeanette's Pathway to Hotel Leadership

Jeanette’s first hotel job was as a laundry attendant. Today, as general manager of The Westley Hotel, she looks for the same spark in new team members that someone once saw in her.

Growing up in Ontario’s Niagara region, where tourism jobs were plentiful, Jeanette discovered hospitality when she was in high school. At her first interview, Jeanette met with the hiring manager before being invited to meet the hotel’s owner. That conversation opened her eyes to what a future in the industry could look like.

Her role as a laundry room attendant became an introduction to the world of hospitality. As colleagues stopped by to collect or drop off uniforms, Jeanette met people from the kitchen, housekeeping, front office and beyond, each with their own story, goals and contribution to the hotel. What stayed with her was the camaraderie, the fun and the sense that everyone’s work mattered.

> “We all have a different role, but are crucial in the overall success of our operations,” Jeanette shares. “The guest experience relies on everyone doing their part.”

After high school, Jeanette pursued a bachelor of commerce in hospitality and tourism management at the University of Guelph. A one-year co-op placement brought her to Fairmont Banff Springs as a front desk attendant, where she fell in love with the Rockies and working at a luxury hotel.

She returned to Guelph to finish her degree, but knew she wanted to return to Alberta. After graduation, she joined Fairmont’s leadership development program in Jasper. Over 18 months, Fairmont invested in her learning and growth, cementing her passion for hospitality and helping her develop as a leader.

Today, Jeanette brings lessons from those early experiences to The Westley. She has a true desire to know the people on her team, understand their goals and create a workplace where they can grow while enjoying the work they do together.

Being part of The Westley’s opening team remains a career highlight for Jeanette. It gave her the opportunity to help shape the hotel’s brand and culture from the beginning. She also takes pride in the team winning the Hilton Brand Awards of Excellence every year since opening and hosting community events like the annual tree lighting ceremony in support of Love for Lewiston and fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation.

One favourite memory is the hotel’s 2026 International Women’s Day event. In partnership with the Calgary Hotel Association and Tourism Calgary, The Westley transformed its lobby into a runway to raise funds for Dress for Success. For Jeanette, the event brought together the things she values most about hospitality: people, community, opportunity and fun.

> “I had long wanted to do an event like this where our industry does something to support women and help them take the next step to start or move forward in their careers,” Jeanette shares. “It allowed us to inspire confidence in women to go after an opportunity, take that first step toward their next chapter and gave them the opportunity to contribute. Plus, no other industries bring the fun like hotels and tourism do."

That desire to help others recognize their potential also shapes her everyday leadership. Having started in the laundry room herself, Jeanette knows how much possibility a first hotel job can hold.

> “When you have a culture where people want to bring their best self to work every day, you can get to know them, spot passion and potential,” she says. “You never know if the next laundry attendant or front desk agent you hire has a dream of being something more unless you pay attention. When I see that spark and genuine love of hospitality, I want to coach, encourage and inspire them to pursue hospitality as a career because I know firsthand how rewarding and exciting it can be.”
